Edouard Détaille - Lot 175
Edouard Détaille (Paris 1848-1912 Paris) The review of the troops in the moat of the Tower of London Watercolor over graphite on heavy paper 25.5 x 36 cm. Lower right: stamped in ink ED Our drawing is a fine testimony to the artist's stay in London, as well as to his practice of study drawing on the motif. Detaille visited England several times in the 1870s, but particularly in 1894, as a guest in London's aristocratic and military circles. He observed first-hand the troop reviews, uniforms and ceremonies of the British army, a subject perfectly suited to his specialty as a military history painter, and befriended the Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII, a great lover of military painting. Detaille exhibited some of his British works at the Société des Aquarellistes Français in 1880, prompting the magazine "Le Musée Artistique et Littéraire" to say: "There is always a crowd in admiration before M. Edouard Detaille's exhibition. His Piper, his Fifre du grenadier-Guards, the Scots Guards, and above all his Intérieur de la Tour de Londres à I'beure de la parade, are off-the-wall works, admirably composed, admirably lifted, of very accurate observation, and smelling of the terroir in which they were born. It's living military England, with all the strangeness it can have for our eyes. Figures, costumes, light, everything smacks of the banks of the Thames; and we consider the Scets Guards and the Tower of London at parade time, two capital works worthy of the richest and most precious collections. For his royal patron, he produced "Revue des troupes britanniques par le prince de Galles" (circa 1896-1897), acquired by the Prince, who presented it to his mother Queen Victoria for her Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Following this stay, Detaille painted a double portrait of the Prince of Wales and his brother, the Duke of Connaught, which he exhibited at the 1895 Salon, now in the Salon at Sandringham House (The Royal Collection, inv. RCIN 402582). Expert : Alban DEGRAVE.
