Red half-shagreen with corner pieces, ribbed spine, finely decorated panels, gilt head. (Smeers, Engel). Well-bound copy. A few foxing spots or small, faint pinholes throughout the volume. First edition featuring the delicate illustrations by the painter Timoléon Lobrichon, famous for his portraits of children. Portrait, facsimile, and first inset plate; the others are full-page (3), vignettes, headpieces, and tailpieces. — Portraits, memories, and scenes from childhood in verse, by the author of *Maurin des Maures*. (Vicaire I, col. 21). - LE SAGE (Alain-René). The Story of Gil Blas de Santillane. Illustrations by Jean Gigoux. Paris, Dubochet, 1838, large 8vo. 829 pp.—portrait. Olive half-calf, smooth spine, romantic decoration with gilded fillets and arabesques running lengthwise, marbled edges. (Contemporary binding). - Some foxing, more pronounced on a few leaves. Minor tears in the binding. The approximately 600 woodcuts by Gigoux, famous in the history of 19th-century illustrated books, are from the third printing (1835, 1836, and this one). They differ significantly from previous editions. (Carteret III, 386). - MUSSET (Alfred de) - [JOHANNOT (T.)]. Voyage où il vous plaira. Paris, Hetzel, 1843, large 8vo, 2 leaves–170 pp.–1 leaf–65 plates–vignettes, in black and white. Contemporary aubergine half-basane binding, corners, spine with cold-stamped guilloché false ribs. - Some scuffing on the binding (minor, however), interior fresh, wide margins. First edition and first printing. A remarkable and fantastic (in the literal sense) work, superbly illustrated by Tony Johannot with several vignettes in the text and 63 plates (including the frontispiece) wood-engraved by various artists. “This book, richly illustrated, is (...) a very fine example of the Romantic era due to its originality” (Carteret, III, p. 596) - (Vicaire V, col. 1252). INCLUDED: - MASSILLON (Jean-Baptiste). Œuvres. Paris, Lefèvre, 1835, 2 volumes, large 8vo. X-768 pp. - 2ff.-720 pp. - portrait. Contemporary bindings in cherry-colored glossy half-calf, spine with 4 flat raised bands, gilded filleted panels, friezes at the top and bottom, marbled edges. - Decorative bindings, in excellent condition. Foxing on a few quires. Text in two columns. This edition is based on the 1745 edition, which was itself prepared by the author’s nephew.
