HUGO (Count Joseph-Leopold-Sigisbert). Memoirs of General Hu - Lot 60
HUGO (Count Joseph-Leopold-Sigisbert). Memoirs of General Hugo, Governor of Several Provinces and Adjutant General of the Armies in Spain. Paris, Ladvocat, 1823; 3 in-8 volumes, paperback. 1 f.-292 pp. - CII-388p. 2 ff.-480 pp. Beige marbled paper covers, labels on the spines, entirely untrimmed. A copy as published, in fresh condition, but to which the Memoirs of General Aubertin—175 pages that should appear at the beginning of the first volume—have not been attached; consequently, the first volume begins directly with the running title “Memoirs of General Hugo” (sic). (Collection of Memoirs of the Marshals of France and French Generals). First edition. The famous memoirs of the poet’s father focus primarily on Napoleonic Italy and the War in Spain. The first volume recounts the War in the Vendée, the campaign of Year VIII, then Italy, and Fradiavolo; it concludes with reflections on military art and medicine. The second volume contains the “Historical Summary of the Events That Led Joseph Napoleon to the Throne of Spain...” (102 pages) before continuing with the War in Spain; the third volume contains the account of the siege of Thionville, which had previously been published separately. (Tulard, 712 – Vicaire IV, col. 225 – Quérard IV, p. 157).
