CABANIS (Pierre-Jean-Georges). Reports on the Physical and Moral Nature of Man. Paris, Published by the Bibliothèque Choisie, 1830; 2 volumes, in-8. 405 pp.—1f.—430 pp.—1f. Contemporary light brown half-calf bindings, faux raised bands, gilt friezes, embossed fleurons, green title labels, marbled edges. - Handwritten "ex dono" in ink on the flyleaf of Volume I (Colin, former officer... to Dr. Coqueret). Small tear on one cap and corresponding spine split 3 cm long; margins very slightly yellowed. This work, first published under the title “Traité du physique…,” established its author’s reputation. It consists of twelve treatises first printed in the Journal de l’Institut, then separately in 1802. A major classic of medical philosophy—which Marx described as the pinnacle of French materialism—this work is the first to methodically address the relationship between psychology and physiology, drawing on Condillac’s theories of sensibility. The analytical table was compiled by the famous philosopher and economist Destutt de Tracy.
