Sallé (Paris, 1712–1778) gave up practicing law, hindered by his shyness. He confined himself to scholarly work and published studies remarkable for their clarity and erudition. He was one of the most learned jurists of his time, unanimously regarded as one of the finest commentators on the ordinances of Louis XIV. However, his works on the ordinances of Louis XV are more frequently encountered.
