AGUESSEAU (Henri-François, Chancellor of). Works. Paris, Published by the Associated Booksellers, 1759–1789, 13 volumes, in-4. Marbled, flamed, or veined fawn calfskin, with triple blind-stamped raised bands, ornate ribbed spine, red title labels, and comb-cut edges. (Contemporary bindings). - The interiors of the volumes are fresh. Three split joints (vols. 1 and 2), three rubbed caps, a few slightly worn corners, some scuffs, flaking, or rodent damage on four covers. Portrait engraved by Daulé after a drawing by Vivien. First collected edition of the works of Chancellor d’Aguesseau (1668–1751), compiled by his secretary, Abbé André. The Chancellor’s works are of paramount importance for the political and legal history of the late 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. D’Aguesseau advocated for the unification of case law in matters governed by statutory law, anticipating the drafters of the Civil Code. His struggle against Law’s system, which led to his exile, is also well known. Volume 13 is often missing. (Dupin, 1349 – Brunet I, 468).
