JASMIN (Jacques Boé, known as...) (1798–1864). *Las papillot - Lot 218
JASMIN (Jacques Boé, known as...) (1798–1864). *Las papillotos de Jasmin, Hairdresser, of the Academies of Agen and Bourdéou, etc.* 1825–1843. Agen, Noubel, 1842–1863, 4 volumes in-8, Frontispiece–XXXIX pp.–432 pp. - Engraved portrait—LX pp.—404 pp.—2 ff. of music score as a separate insert—Frontispiece on laid paper, mounted—LX pp.—363 pp.—XX pp.—412 pp. Contemporary bronze half-chagrin binding, smooth spines. - Author’s dedication in Volume 3: “affectionate tribute from the author to Madame Hochet, née Sylvain Dumont.” Yellowed portrait (Volume 2), a few scattered light foxing spots. Rare complete edition of the 4 volumes of the poetic works of Jasmin, a famous hairdresser-poet born in Agen in 1798, who died in 1864. Bilingual text. Volume 1, dated 1843: numerous vignettes and typographic ornaments engraved on wood. Andrieu I, 378 erroneously lists 50 rather than 39 pp. in Roman type; the volume is indeed complete with 39 introductory pages. He also notes “4 engravings by Montaut d’Oléron, which are missing from many copies.” Our copy contains only one, on the frontispiece. - Volume 2, dated 1842: Andrieu does not describe this volume, having never seen a copy of it. - Volume 3: Andrieu, p. 379. - Volumes 2 and 4 are here in their first editions. A self-taught poet, Jasmin was taught by his father, who composed burlesque couplets for weddings, festivals, and charivaris. He set up his own business as a wigmaker, and his “papillotes”—a name borrowed from his profession that he applied to his works—drew a steady stream of customers to his shop. His fame reached Paris, where Sainte-Beuve (to whom this edition is dedicated) and Nodier cemented his reputation. He is regarded as one of the first innovators of the Occitan language in the 19th century and a precursor of the Félibrige movement. - (Thomas, *Voix d’en bas*, p. 213).
